Dr Joseph Kay is a tutor and researcher, formerly working as a tutor for undergraduate students at the University of Oxford, where he was awarded a DPhil in Music in 2019. Passionate about enabling students to realise their full potential, he likes teaching that is adaptive, responding to the individual needs of each of his students and tailoring every lesson accordingly. Allied with this is his firm belief that showing is a more valuable teaching approach than telling; a student will learn better, and remember what they have learnt for longer, if they are given the space to find out answers for themselves. Not only is this exploratory approach a much better strategy for learning, it’s also much more fun!
Joseph worked as a tutor at the University of Oxford for three years, specialising in music history, the philosophy and sociology of music, composition, and essay writing and study skills. Since 2013 he has also been involved in the admissions process at Oxford University’s Faculty of Music, acting as the central marker for performance auditions and composition submissions. Alongside his university teaching, Joseph has also taught a number of students privately in Oxford and London, and has mentored in numerous outreach projects and courses.

Hi, I'm Miles! I graduated cum laude from Harvard College with a degree in English. In the course of writing everything from travel guidebooks to poetry to political campaign statements to PR copy, I've come to understand the drafting and editing process intimately. I'd like not just to help you cross T's and dot i's, but to be your human vision board -- helping you craft unique approaches to make you and your writing stand out. Whether you're getting ready to apply to college, need a second set of eyes on your paper, or would like some extra help with a tricky project, I'm glad to lend my expertise.
I've been lucky to get to lead workshops, work with doctoral students on their dissertations, and assist high schoolers with their college applications. I know the SAT and AP tests inside and out and am a seasoned and confident test-taker. In high school, I was chosen as a national student poet by the Library of Congress and traveled around the country advocating for creative writing and teaching workshops (and got to meet President Obama!). Now I live in New York City, where I play music, write, hike, travel, and cook.
I love getting to know students and finding out what makes them tick--it’s the most rewarding part of being a tutor. No two students are the same, and I want us to find what works for you. When we meet, I’ll get to know you--your areas of interest and skill level, how you like to learn, and what you’re hoping to get out of our time. From there we can develop a learning plan to help you grow your confidence and skills.
My specialties: Essay editing, proofreading, test prep, creative writing, English & American literature, history, social studies, grammar, reading.
Can’t wait to get to know you!
Please note that I reserve the right to charge for up to the original length of the lesson in the event of a no-show or last-minute cancellation.

Tutoring fees normally vary between £20 and £80 per hour, depending on the academic level and complexity of the subject. For all that time you will have the undivided attention of your tutor.
One-to–one tutoring will have an immediate impact on your performance. You can ask your tutor to clarify any issues or confusion without experiencing the discomfort you might have in the classroom. Sessions are tailored to your specific needs and special interests. Your tutor is experienced in helping you to gain deeper understanding of key issues to improve your performance in exams. Students often remark on how much their confidence has been boosted by these discussions, which in turn enhances performance in other ways as well – e.g. presentations and oral discussions.
